Tierra Madre coffee is grown solely by a cooperative of 125 women producers in Jinotega, Nicaragua, who earn a premium tied to meeting rigorous quality standards. The Women Coffee Producers initiative was created to celebrate and support women's contributions to coffee cultivation worldwide, showcasing women-led producer organizations and associations across different countries. Its central goal is to tackle the persistent wage gap women face in the industry by layering a gender-equity premium on top of the standard base price.
In Nicaragua specifically, women producers receive an extra premium designed to help them secure legal land titles. This matters because in Jinotega, women hold ownership of just 15% of the land, a critical asset needed to qualify for microcredit loans that fund production and other income-generating activities essential to improving their quality of life.
Jinotega is located in north-central Nicaragua in the central highlands. It is Nicaragua's second largest department and contains eight municipalities. The area is rugged but has fertile soil that is ideal for growing coffee and many other crops such as maize, potatoes, beans, and wheat.
